South by Southwest (SXSW) is a set of film, interactive and music festivals and conferences that take place every spring in Austin, Texas, United States. It draws huge crowds from all over the world. In 2012, Google set up their own village on Rainey Street where they featured some of their most exciting products. They also set up a two day concert called Live on the Lot featuring bands like The Shins, Gossip and the one and only Jimmy Cliff.
I worked with the superb Google team and the amazing people of Upperquad in structuring the site on a tight schedule. I designed the comps and illustrated the site.
I drew a map of the Google Village showing the area and giving an introduction into the five main houses.
Google hosted a number of talks, seminars, group chats and other activities during SXSW. Organizing them visually was a challenge.
For the home page I illustrated the Austin skyline as well as the four houses that hosted the events. The approach was a quirky and fun while still fitting into the Google brand.
Each house had their own page where they could highlight the most exciting activites.
Most of the site was based around talking about tech. Fun as that is, we felt that for the really fun part we should reskin the website in a dramatic way.
